These include brush type, color sets, tools and so much more. There is an abundance of panels that you can turn on or off.
You can drag and drop brushes, papers, color sets, or stencils to the appropriate panels. This applies not only with files but with all kinds of other stuff. You can drag and drop a picture from any application, file manager, or Internet browser directly to Rebelle. One of the best functions of Rebelle is the ability to drag and drop images from other sources onto the canvas. Then there is the ability to tile the stencil across the canvas. Stencils also have the option to extend the border of the stencil to the entire canvas, so you don’t accidentally paint over the edge of the border. You can import any picture you want into the stencil group. Stencils provide a more precise drawing of specific items. Zoom in up to 2000% to make those final touch-ups.
Even if you only work on one monitor, the Reference panel lets you zoom in and pan, so you can focus on the part of the image you’re painting at the moment when you need to. Use the Reference panel on one monitor or part of one, while you paint on the other. I like having a reference image right beside my drawing as well as a preview panel. The Perspective tool allows you to select from one, two, and three-point perspectives. Straight line, Ruler, and Perspective tools are also available. The area selected can be increased or deleted by adding more selections to it. The selection tools include freehand, point to point, ellipses, and rectangles. Of course, the talented CG artist probably won’t need this function, but I was glad it was there. With the area selected, you can’t paint outside the line. The selection mode enables you to carve out shapes to paint within. The selection tools help mask some faults in your painting ability. All these choices and you haven’t even started painting yet. Finally, select the background color of your canvas. Just choose from a set of defaults or type in your own size coordinates. The size of the canvas is virtually unlimited. Even this can be changed with the texture scale slider. These vary in texture from rough to totally smooth. There are eight initial canvas types to choose from. With the Brush Creator, you can import graphics to represent brush shapes or grain, then play with spacing, opacity, and jitter before saving the result as a permanent preset. If you are not satisfied with the defaults, you can quickly create your own brush. Each of these come with their own unique set of brushes. These media include watercolor, acrylic, pastel, pencil (charcoal), pen, marker, and spray. There are seven media you can use, some wet and others dry. You are not limited to only watercolor painting. Rebelle’s selection of digital paper surfaces also affects the path and behavior of the watercolor paint, depending on how rough the grain is. And unlike physical watercolor, you can freeze the paint movement with a single keypress. You can also load the brush with water to increase the extent of the interaction. Watch as the two strokes blend and flow together in a convincingly natural way. You make a stroke with one color, then switch color and paint over or near the first stroke. Rebelle’s technology enables droplets to behave in such a natural manner. Speed it up or pause it to make some adjustments. And you have so much control over the animation. It is this realistic feel to the application that really fascinated me. Watching the wet colors interact with each other, blending together is like watching the real thing. The animation imitates color blending, wet diffusion, and drying. For the wet media, you can adjust the amount of water on the brush, the pressure applied, the size of the brush head, the amount of tilt and rotation to the virtual canvas and so much more.
Each media has its own set of customizable brushes. The only cost is the initial price of the application. It is like having access to a fully stocked art supply store without having to be concerned about the price. The variety of media, canvases, brushes, and colors puts Rebelle in a class of its own. It works especially well with watercolors as it exactly simulates painting with a wet brush. Rebelle 3 enables you to work in a variety of wet and dry media, including inks. Putting it on the canvas is a matter of either a mouse click or a graphic pen. The creations are only limited to what you envision in your mind. Because it is digital, expertise with a brush is not required. It is intended for traditional painters, CG artists, or those amateurs who are exploring their artistic talent.
